Throwback Cinema’ Welcomes The New Year With A Diane Keaton Tribute

As we head into the new year, Ster-Kinekor’s popular Throwback Cinema promotion continues, bringing back iconic movie titles to the big screen at the classic price of just R50 per ticket. All the films will now be screened for two weeks from date of release, giving movie lovers another chance to watch them again.

In January, in celebration of the late actress Diane Keaton’s birthday on 05 January, two of her films will be screened. The classic movie from 1996, The First Wives Club, will be screened across all the sites that show Throwback Cinema titles, while the iconic Annie Hall will only be shown at Cinema Nouveau in Rosebank, Johannesburg. We also take a walk down the yellow brick road and enjoy a chocolate overload with the amazing Willy Wonka.

Says Lynne Wylie, chief marketing officer of Ster-Kinekor:

“Bringing back popular movie titles from years gone by is proving to be a must-see-again option for our big screen fans and, with the ticket price for these Throwback Cinema titles at just R50, what’s not to love? Continuing this promotion, January’s line-up spans several movie genres, ensuring there is something for everyone as we head into 2026 – whether it’s repeat viewing or a first-time big screen moment to share.”

Launching 2026 in style is the enduring story of courage and friendship, The Wizard of Oz, which releases nationally on 02 January. This classic tale, first released way back in 1936, stars a young Judy Garland in the title role. Young Dorothy Gale and her dog Toto are swept away by a tornado from their Kansas farm to the magical Land of Oz, where she makes friends with a lion, a scarecrow and a tin man. They embark on a quest as they make their way along the yellow brick road to see the Wizard, who can return her to her home and fulfill the others’ wishes of the things they miss most in their lives. The Wicked Witch of the West is the only thing that could stop them. Directed by Victor Fleming, the film also stars Frank Morgan, Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr, Jack Haley and Margaret Hamilton.

Next up on the big screen, from 09 January, is the deliciously delightful film, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Based on Roald Dahl’s novel of the same name, the film was first released in 1971, starring Gene Wilder in the lead role. When eccentric candy man Willy Wonka promises a lifetime supply of sweets and a tour of his mysterious chocolate factory to five lucky kids, penniless Charlie Bucket seeks the elusive golden ticket that will make him a winner. The film, directed by Mel Stuart, also stars Jack Albertson and Peter Ostrum as Charlie.

Releasing on 23 January, The First Wives Club celebrates the late great actress, Diane Keaton. This 1996 comedy sees Keaton paired with Goldie Hawn and Bette Midler as three divorced women who, reunited by the death of a college friend, seek revenge on the husbands who left them for younger women. They come up with a cleverly devious plan to hit their exes where it really hurts – in their wallets! Directed by Hugh Wilson, the film also stars Maggie Smith, Victor Garber, Sarah Jessica Parker and Stockard Channing.

Screening at Cinema Nouveau in Rosebank from 09 January, fans of Diane Keaton will revel in the return of one of her most iconic roles as Annie Hall. First released in 1977, and starring Keaton opposite Woody Allen who also directed Annie Hall, the film garnered four Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress and Best Original Screenplay. Alvy Singer, a divorced Jewish comedian, reflects on his relationship with ex-lover Annie Hall, an aspiring, ditsy nightclub singer, which ended abruptly just like his previous marriages.

Because great movies never go out of style, don’t miss your chance to enjoy special moments on the big screen once again. Throwback Cinema titles are screened at the following Ster-Kinekor sites: Sandton, Mall of Africa, Eastgate, Cresta and Rosebank Nouveau in Johannesburg; Irene and The Grove in Tshwane; Vaal in Vanderbijlpark; Mooirivier in Potchefstroom; Shelly Beach in KZN; Baywest in Gqeberha; Somerset Mall in Somerset West; and Blue Route, V&A Waterfront, Capegate and Tygervalley in Cape Town.
