April’s Throwback Cinema Films Celebrate Classic Movies, Actors, and Stories
Ster-Kinekor’s Throwback Cinema movie line-up for April celebrates great titles from the past, perfect for school holiday viewing with your besties, a date night, or special family time at the movies. This month’s line-up has certainly stood the test of time, and all the titles deserve another viewing on the big screen. And, with tickets at the classic price of just R50, what’s not to enjoy?

“Our Throwback Cinema titles, which now each screen for two weeks, are proving to be a very popular way for audiences to enjoy classic films on the big screen again. The April line-up includes special films featuring Hollywood stars that can be enjoyed again, either as repeat viewing or as a first-time cinema experience.”
School holiday festivities continue into the first week of April, with the second week’s screening of the evergreen and ever-lovable animation film from 03 April. Shrek Forever After, which first released in 2010, sees Shrek facing a midlife-crisis burden. Longing for the days when he felt like a real ogre, he makes a pact with magic deal-maker Rumpelstiltskin. But when he’s duped and sent to a twisted version of Far Far Away – where Rumpelstiltskin is king, ogres are hunted, and he and Fiona have never met, he sets out to restore his world and reclaim his true love.

Also screening from 03 April is the delightful 2010 romantic comedy, Eat Pray Love. The film stars Julia Roberts as Elizabeth Gilbert, a married woman who realises how unhappy her marriage really is, and that her life needs to go in a different direction. After a painful divorce, she takes off on a round-the-world journey to ‘find herself’. Directed by Ryan Murphy, the film also stars Javier Bardem, Richard Jenkins, Viola Davis and Billy Crudup, among others.

‘Grease is the word’… Good girl Sandy (Olivia Newton-John) and greaser Danny (John Travolta) fall in love over the summer. But when they unexpectedly discover they’re now in the same high school, will they be able to rekindle their romance despite their eccentric friends? The popular 1978 musical Grease, with its iconic songs, returns to the big screen on 10 April for two weeks. Directed by Randal Kleiserer, the film also stars Stockard Channing, Michael Tucci, Didi Conn, Jeff Conaway, Eve Arden, and Frankie Avalon.

The coming-of-age animation comedy, Up, releases for two weeks from 24 April, and in time for a week with two public holidays, perfect for a visit to the cinema. Carl Fredricksen spent his entire life dreaming of exploring the globe and experiencing life to its fullest. But at age 78, life seems to have passed him by, until a twist of fate (and a persistent 8-year-old wilderness explorer named Russell) gives him a new lease on life. First released in 2009, the film is directed by Pete Docter and Bob Peterson, and features the voices of Edward Asner, Jordan Nagai, John Ratzenberger and Christopher Plummer.

Also, during April, Throwback Cinema features two classic movies that screen for two weeks only at Rosebank Nouveau in Johannesburg.
Screening from 03 April is the 1957 classic romantic drama, An Affair to Remember. A couple falls in love and agrees to meet in six months at the Empire State Building – but will it happen? Starring Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr in the lead roles, the film is directed by Leo McCarey, and also stars Richard Denning, Neva Patterson, Cathleen Nesbitt and Robert Q. Lewis.

Releasing on 24 April for two weeks, is the 1946 classic drama, It’s A Wonderful Life. George Bailey has spent his entire life giving to the people of Bedford Falls. All that prevents rich skinflint Mr. Potter from taking over the entire town is George’s modest building and loan company. But on Christmas Eve the business’s $8,000 is lost and George’s troubles begin. However, it takes an angel sent from heaven to help the desperately frustrated businessman see the value of his own life. Directed by Frank Capra, the film stars James Stewart, Donna Reed, Lionel Barrymore, Thomas Mitchell and Beulah Bondi.
