The mountain was alive, with the sound of music…

The Sound Of Music’ Junior Cast On Table Mountain

Yesterday was a true pleasure, for all involved!

The young cast members were excited to be able to connect with each other, meet members of the press, and enjoy the incredible sights and sounds of Cape Town’s favourite tourist destination, the Table Mountain Cable Way – the perfect orientation event, before rehearsals begin on 6 November at Artscape.

The Von Trapp children are Duvan Marren, Kieren Prince, Stephan vd Westhuizen, Lara Smit, Thomas Boshoff, Genevieve Murray, Aiden Attwell, Judi Hattingh, Rylan Lemmetuis, Sophie Shaw, Luke Przybojewski, Lucy Mackay, Lexi Reinders, Lucy Mackay, Thala Duma, Abigail Chitsike, Hera Benade, Julie Browne – accompanied by Brittany Smith (Maria), Ashley Scott (Lisel), and Che-Jean Jupp (Rolf).

Talented soprano, and leading lady, Brittany Smith, treated the group to a surprise performance of the title song, The Sound Of Music.

Hosted by the Table Mountain Cableway.

Cast for the upcoming South African tour include: The lead role of Maria will be played by Cape Town Opera soprano, Brittany Smith (recently seen in Terrence McNally’s Master Class), the role of the Captain von Trapp will be played by Craig Urbani (The Rocky Horror Show), Janelle Visagie will be reprising her Fleur du Cap award-winning portrayal of Mother Abbess, Ashley Scott as Lisel, and Che-Jean Jupp as Rolf.

The 18 young performers selected to play the musical Von Trapp children are:
Duvan Marren, Kieren Prince, Stephan vd Westhuizen, Lara Smit, Thomas Boshoff, Genevieve Murray, Aiden Attwell, Judi Hattingh, Rylan Lemmetuis, Sophie Shaw, Luke Przybojewski, Lucy Mackay, Lexi Reinders, Lucy Mackay, Thala Duma, Abigail Chitsike, Hera Benade, and Julie Browne.

The Sound Of Music marks the 11th and final collaboration between legendary lyricists Rodgers & Hammerstein, and features a treasure trove of popular show tunes, including “My Favorite Things”, “Climb Ev’ry Mountain”, “Do Re Mi”, “Sixteen Going On Seventeen”, and many more. Musical direction by Kevin Kraak.

The inspirational story, based on the memoir of Maria Von Trapp, follows a young nun in-training who serves as governess to the seven children of the imperious Captain von Trapp, bringing music and joy to the household. But as the forces of Nazism take hold of Austria, Maria and the entire Von Trapp family must make a moral decision.

The original stage production won six Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and was then adapted into the five-time Oscar-winning film, which went on to become the most-successful movie musical of all time.

Directed by Steven Stead (Into The Woods, Sweeney Todd, Cabaret), this new production, with sumptuous sets and costumes, and songs that will stay with you long after the curtain comes down, will be a stellar theatrical event.
