Shaka iLembe – Into the Lion’s Den
The signs of war have been simmering, shifting alliances, whispered betrayals, armies quietly gathering strength. In this episode, the storm breaks. The tension erupts and war takes centre stage.
Somveli is haunted by a nightmare of his father King Dingiswayo accusing him of betrayal. Upon waking, he is summoned by the king, who is devastated after hearing of a close family member’s death at the hands of the Ndwandwe. This is the final straw. Furious, Dingiswayo declares war.
Shaka is notified and prepares to join Dingiswayo for battle, but encouraged by Queen Nandi, he delays a day to ensure his army is ready. Meanwhile, Nongila and Ngwadi meet with the Xhosa King Ndlambe, and learn more about the colonial threats facing them with the Boers and British. They are invited to a secret meeting with other Xhosa kings.
This meeting becomes a powerful moment of historical and cultural reflection. The debates are intense, as leaders weigh the risks of resistance, the costs of inaction and who to trust. The presence of folk singer Bongeziwe Mabandla and choreographer Gregory Maqoma adds poetic and performative weight to the gathering, connecting the past to the present.
At oYengweni, Mabhamba accuses Ntombazana of being Zwide’s pawn. She refuses to speak, insisting she’ll only talk to Dingiswayo. When brought before him, she’s met with fury! Dingiswayo holds an axe to Deliwe’s throat, demanding the truth. Tearfully, Ntombazana confesses she was sent to seduce and bewitch him with muthi. Mabhamba immediately calls for their execution.
In a final act of desperation, Ntombazana claims there’s more to reveal. Somveli, fearing exposure, accuses her of lying. She seizes his knife and presses it to his throat. Dingiswayo, unshaken, dares her to kill him. Instead, she releases Somveli, declares her love for Dingiswayo, and offers her life. She hands the knife to Somveli, daring him to finish her. He raises it – but Dingiswayo steps in, ordering him to stop.
Ntombazana realises she has a second chance and seduces Dingiswayo that night, fulfilling her mission by extracting his seed and secretly sending it to Ntombazi. The next morning, Dingiswayo learns she is gone and a guard has been killed, he has been deceived. Wracked with guilt, Somveli confesses to being an Ndwandwe spy. Enraged, Dingiswayo exiles him.
As the Mthethwa army prepares to march, Ntombazi performs a dark ritual using Dingiswayo’s seed. A swarm of bats descends on the Mthethwa camp, and a bewitched Dingiswayo wanders into the night, believing he’s leading his army. In truth, he is alone, disoriented and walking straight into the enemy’s territory.
Elsewhere, Boer raiders attack the Xhosas and in defense, Ngwandi is victorious in his first kill. He and Nongila escape the Xhosa kingdom.
Meanwhile, Dingiswayo, fully under Ntombazi’s spell, arrives alone at the gates of eGudunkomo. The lion walks into the den without knowing he has already been caught.
