The Savanna Newcomer Showcase A Triumph As Up-And-Coming Comedians Command The Stage

What a show! In a spectacular night of laughter and entertainment, the Savanna Newcomer Showcase took center stage at a sold out Theatre On The Square in Sandton, leaving the audience in stitches. The 2024 edition proved to be a colossal success, with a jam-packed venue featuring seasoned comedians, media representatives, and agencies, all rallying behind the emerging talents competing for the coveted Savanna Newcomer Award at this year’s Savanna Comics’ Choice Comedy Awards.

Hosted by 2023 Comedian of the Year winner, Robby Collins, the evening kicked off with the last year’s Savanna Newcomer Award winner, Wazi M Kunene, setting the comedic tone. The spotlight then shifted to 20 talented newcomers who, selected at random, unleashed five minutes of their best material.

The 20 newcomers who are being flown in from all over the country to show off their comedic chops were: Mzonke Maloney, Wesley Paulse, Emile Alexander, Obakeng Moroe, Zachary Esau, Chuma Bentele, Céline Tshika, Molokela Makola, Sipho Luther, Thula Sithole, Kaashif Stellenboom, Nhlanhla Biokgantsho Shabangu, Khabane Moloi, Lerato Sokhulu, Nolwazi Nkwandla, Callum Hitchcock, Sarah Abraham, Mick Pillay, Vincent Joseph, and Mr Chase.

Thanks to the support of LIFT, the newcomers, hailing from various corners of South Africa, were flown in for the opportunity to showcase their comedic prowess at this annual event. Having watched the newcomers on stage, the industry will now cast their votes and the top five comedians will be named the finalists at the Savanna Comics’ Choice Comedy Awards nominee announcement event in February.

Manuela Dias de Deus, producer of the Savanna Comics’ Choice Comedy Awards, redlects on the success of the event saying,

The 2024 Savanna Comics’ Choice Comedy Awards will take place on Saturday, 13 April at The Lyric Theatre at Gold Reef City. Limited tickets are on sale via Computicket now.
