From Decay to Dignity: Joburg Unites to Clean and Celebrate Newtown on Mandela Day
In the true spirit of Madiba, the City of Joburg, in partnership with Joburg City Theatres and The Market Theatre, invites all Joburgers to roll up their sleeves and join hands in a special Mandela Day Clean-Up and Celebration in the heart of the Newtown Cultural Precinct on Thursday, 18 July 2025.
The event runs from 09h00 to 12h00, with volunteers gathering to clean, paint and rejuvenate one of Johannesburg’s most iconic arts and culture spaces. Cleaning teams will continue their work throughout the day as part of the City’s broader ongoing campaign to restore and maintain key public spaces. Creatives based in Newtown including the award winning Moving Into Dance (MID) will also be part of this campaign.
CEO of Joburg CityTheatres, Ms Xoliswa Nduneni-Ngema, says:
“Newtown has always been a heartbeat of culture in Joburg — and this Mandela Day, we continue to restore, repair and revive Newtown. We are building connections, and showing what’spossible when community and creatives lead the way.”
Volunteers, artists, families, and cultural activists are encouraged to come dressed comfortably and bring their energy — ready to give back and celebrate Madiba’s legacy through action and art.
