“The hills are alive, with the sound of music…”

Pieter Toerien and Cape Town Opera are proud to present the Cape Town Von Trapp children!

Pieter Toerien, with Cape Town Opera, presents the much-anticipated revival tour of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s classic musical, The Sound of Music.

Chosen from hundreds of hopeful and talented candidates, the 18 young performers were selected to play the musical Von Trapp children, in the much anticipated Artscape revival season, alongside Brittany Smith as Maria Von Trapp, Craig Urbani as Captain Von Trapp, and Janelle Visagie as the Mother Abbess.
This family favourite, The Sound of Music, opens at the Artscape Opera House from 14 December, 2023 to 14 January, 2024 before moving to The Teatro at Montecasino in Johannesburg.
Back row – Duvan Marren, Kieren Prince, Stephan vd Westhuizen, Lara Smit, Thomas Boshoff.
Middle row – Genevieve Murray, Aiden Attwell, Judi Hattingh, Rylan Lemmetuis, Sophie Shaw, Luke Przybojewski.

“Of all the shows we have presented over the years, The Sound Of Music remains in the top five most requested shows by our audience. We are thrilled to be able to present this wonderful show to a whole new generation of musical fans”, says Toerien.

Casting has been revealed for the upcoming South African tour: The lead role of Maria will be played by Cape Town Opera soprano, Brittany Smith (recently seen in Terrence McNally’s Master Class), the role of the Captain von Trapp will be played by Craig Urbani (The Rocky Horror Show), and Janelle Visagie will be reprising her Fleur du Cap award-winning portrayal of Mother Abbess.

Auditions for the Johannesburg Von Trapp children will take place at the Montecasino Teatro on Saturday 30 September and Sunday 1 October – for the full audition brief email hello@lamta.co.za

The Sound of Music marks the 11th and final collaboration between legendary lyricists Rodgers & Hammerstein, and features a treasure trove of popular show tunes, including “My Favorite Things”, “Climb Ev’ry Mountain”, “Do Re Mi”, “Sixteen Going On Seventeen”, and many more. Musical direction by Kevin Kraak.

The inspirational story, based on the memoir of Maria Von Trapp, follows a young nun in-training who serves as governess to the seven children of the imperious Captain von Trapp, bringing music and joy to the household. But as the forces of Nazism take hold of Austria, Maria and the entire Von Trapp family must make a moral decision.

The original stage production won six Tony awards, including Best Musical, and was then adapted into the five-time Oscar-winning film, which went on to become the most-successful movie musical of all time.

Directed by Steven Stead (Into The Woods, Sweeney Todd, Cabaret), this new production, with sumptuous sets and costumes, and songs that will stay with you long after the curtain comes down, will be a stellar theatrical event.
