King Pie ruled the stage on The Masked Singer South Africa
Majestic, flavour-packed and deliciously mysterious, King Pie kept the Masked Singer South Africa detectives hungry for answers for weeks. Somizi Mhlongo, J’Something, Sithelo Shozi and Skhumba were entirely bamboozled by the royal highness of all pies – until his crust came off in this week’s fun-filled episode of SABC 2’s hugely popular guessing game.
Behind the King Pie Mask was the inimitable comedian, musician and entrepreneur Rikus de Beer of Radio Raps fame, who first took social media by storm with his quick-witted alter ego, Jonathan. Since then, Rikus – or Radio Raps, as most people have come to call him – has packed theatres at home and abroad, taken his famous character to the big screen and conquered television, online and streaming entertainment with his tongue-in-cheek comedy enterprise.
This week, five Masks set the stage alight with electrifying solo performances – Leopard, Chopsticks, Mosquito, Spotty and King Pie. To assist – or perhaps baffle – the detectives even further in their quest to identify these disguised A-listers, all determined to stay anonymous and clinch the coveted Golden Mask Trophy, a family or friend confidante was also called upon to share invaluable clues.
Before King Pie wielded his sceptre to get the audience on their feet with the Miley Cyrus anthem “Party in the U.S.A.“, he returned to his palace in a fresh clue package.
“I may be rolling around in my royal mantle,” the monarch teased, “but a cape and a Kryptonite allergy shaped me.” While the show’s enigmatic Men and Women in Black worked up a sweat, King Pie also disclosed that, in another life, he might have been on a pitch, guiding a team to victory.
Next, he struck a serene, meditative pose and declared, “I was once a silent voice, but now I lead the best in the world.” The Men and Women in Black then joined him in a choir formation before the ruler concluded: “The biggest surprise might be discovering that this King Pie was carrying a singer inside him the whole time.”
Adding to these head-scratching hints, King Pie’s secret special person, appearing only in silhouette, revealed that the regal delight “traded his jersey dreams for the ledger, mastering the art and spirit of the entrepreneur“.
The only thing the four detectives could confidently pin down was that King Pie was an amazing performer. As for the man filling the Mask, their theories remained pie in the sky.
J’Something took note of the fact that King Pie had dwelt in a castle throughout the season and often referred to being on a pitch. Linking the castle reference to cricket’s Castle series and factoring in the choir clue, he deduced that it was international cricket legend AB de Villiers, who has also released a music album.
Somizi, however, struggled to follow King Pie’s crumbs and admitted he was simply throwing out a random name – kwaito king Kabelo Mabalane.
Meanwhile, Sithelo realised she was likely on the wrong track with her identification of King Pie as comedian Darren Maule in a previous episode, especially in light of this week’s clue about the pie king enjoying moments alone. So, she changed course and opted for singer and music producer Ruan Josh.
But the sporting references and King Pie’s desire to be a coach stood out to Skhumba, who picked assistant Springbok coach Mzwandile Stick.
When this week’s voting results were announced, Spotty paw-hopped into the next round alongside buzzmaker Mosquito, leaving King Pie, Chopsticks and Leopard in the Danger Zone. But the detectives decided to save Chopsticks for another click-clack performance. That meant either Leopard or King Pie would be unmasked.
Ultimately, it was time for King Pie to be dethroned.
But before losing his crown, the detectives made their final calls. J’Something stuck with AB de Villiers, Somizi with Kabelo Mabalane, and Skhumba with Mzwandile Stick. However, Sithelo changed her mind. Although she admitted she was still clueless about who King Pie was, she reverted to her previous guess of Darren Maule.
The detective panel’s jaws were on the floor when comedic force Rikus de Beer – widely known as Radio Raps – emerged as the guyinside The Masked Singer South Africa’s pastry sensation, King Pie.
“I think I’m in the wrong show,” Skhumba lamented, having once again failed to recognise a fellow comedian – for the fifth time.
Rikus confided that he had a blast performing as the massive and magnificent King Pie.
“It was like wearing a caravan, and there’s not a lot of wriggle room… but I’ve always wanted to be in a pie.”
He then insisted that his King Pie on The Masked Singer South Africa was a pepper steak pie – his all-time favourite.
Now, there’s great news for pie lovers who are dying to grab a taste of comfort after watching King Pie dish up the fun on The Masked Singer South Africa Season 3. King Pie has just added a new range bearing a famous chef’s signature to its flavourful classics. Keep an eye out for the mouthwatering “Ntomb’emhlophe“, “Chotlho“, “Smoortjie“, “Slow-braised Brisket” and “Payday” pies.
