Cloak-and-dagger in fairyland
It didn’t take the players in Die Brug long to start scheming among themselves. After all, there’s R1 million at stake, and the big question is: If you win, will you keep it all for yourself or share it with the others?
Spoiler alert if you’ve not already watched episode 3…
What nine of the remaining eleven players don’t know, is that R100 000 of the prize money has already been won, provided the two recipients can keep their mouths shut.
Episode 2 ended on a cliff hanger when Geo and Robert, who were sent alone to a hut on the river to fetch equipment, were faced with a difficult choice. They could get two hammers and 1 500 nails, or they could share R100 000, which is part of the R1 million prize money, and get the much-needed blueprints for building the rafts for the bridge. They chose to take the money on the condition that this secret must stay between them. If any of the other players find out, they’ll lose every cent of it.
It was not an easy decision, especially for Robert. The word “steal” was used, and it is important for him to be a good role model for his children. “At the end of Die Brug, there’s another version of me waiting,” he said. He also became emotional when he talked about his professional rugby career, which was good for him, but forced him to make many sacrifices, like not spending enough time with his mother, who was diagnosed with dementia and later passed away. “I would have wanted more time with her,” he shared.
Jamie was also emotional when she talked about the difficult time she went through after her divorce. “I want to find my voice again,” she said.
She also started to stand up for herself, saying that she’s tired of always being on kitchen duty. “I don’t like being underestimated,” she said and that participating in Die Brug is an opportunity for her, like it is for the other players, to learn about herself and to do things outside her comfort zone.
Players started to form alliances, with Geo, Iana, Marna, Rob, and Tina clearly banding together. But how strong is their loyalty to each other? Do they really trust one another?
Avril, who was chosen as the leader in the first episode, is starting to rub more and more players the wrong way. It’s becoming evident that she’s not a particularly popular leader. Her comment that some think they’re in fairyland and not pulling their weight, got a few other players hot under the collar.
But it was not all blood, sweat and tears. Small treats, including coffee and fresh fruit, lifted the spirits of the players, and William’s birthday was celebrated with French toast and candles for him to blow out.
However, towards the end of Episode 3, Die Brug threw another curveball that left viewers guessing. Who is the stranger approaching the cabin?
