Some secrets should never remain secrets

Jasmine’s life is thrown into turmoil in Skemergrond when a deeply buried secret about her marriage is suddenly exposed. After years of believing her relationship with JP was built on trust and shared history, she discovers that a hidden financial arrangement between their families played a role in bringing them together.

The revelation leaves Jasmine grappling with a profound sense of betrayal from the people she trusted most. As she tries to process the emotional fallout and protect the stability of her family, she is forced to navigate painful conversations, difficult choices and the fear of losing the life she has worked so hard to build.

The truth surfaces when JP’s younger brother, PJ, arrives demanding more money, threatening to reveal the arrangement if his demands are not met. Forced into a corner, JP finally confesses, setting off an emotional chain reaction that tears up the Louw household.

For actress Khadija Heeger, approaching such a layered emotional storyline required deep introspection.

“The question to ask oneself is: how would I feel if that happened to me? It’s a good question to ask frequently in life in general. I often search for similarities to my own experiences – perhaps not the circumstances, but a similar emotional source from which the performance can grow.”

According to Khadija, the betrayal Jasmine experiences fundamentally reshapes how she sees the people closest to her.

“This is a huge betrayal for anyone. It shakes the foundations on which her relationship with JP is built. Despite their issues, he has been her constant – her shoulder to lean on, her partner. It also makes her question her parents’ love, who she is and what her life means now. But most of all, the betrayal by her parents cuts deep.”

Playing Jasmine’s reaction to JP’s long-held secret required navigating a complex tangle of emotions.

“He is a pillar for her. She has so much trust in him that the realisation completely floors her. It wasn’t just about playing anger – it was about the initial shock, the disbelief and the disappointment that he had known all along. At the same time, she knows in her heart that he loves her. That tension made the journey very layered.”

The arrival of PJ brought both contrast in tone and escalating emotional stakes.

“It was very interesting to play opposite Keenan Arrison. Jasmine doesn’t really care for PJ – she tolerates him because she loves JP. We decided early on that some moments could even be a little funny. But once Jasmine discovers how much money is involved and how long it has been going on, everything shifts and the emotional intensity starts to build.”

The arrival of Lizelle (Melanie du Bois), a lawyer with a shared history with JP, further complicates matters.

“I wanted to show a younger side of Jasmine – almost like a teenage love resurfacing. She tries to maintain her dignity, but there’s an undercurrent in the looks and body language. It’s the first time she truly feels her relationship with JP could be threatened, and that vulnerability was important to explore.”

Khadija believes Jasmine’s strength lies in her ability to reconnect with herself, despite everything that happened.

“Jasmine has a powerful sense of self. Even when she feels like she is losing herself, she always finds her way back. She understands who JP is and knows he loves her, but she still has to work through the shock of realising she has been living a different story from the one others knew.”

Ultimately, the actress hopes viewers will take something meaningful from Jasmine’s journey.

“Some secrets should never remain secrets. People need to talk to each other. Jasmine is deeply compassionate and flawed – like all of us. It’s okay to not be perfect.”

As the storyline continues to unfold, Jasmine will be forced to confront not only the truth about her past, but also what she is willing to fight for in her future.
