SA indie artist meelu releases her most personal single yet with ‘candlelight’
South African-born indie artist meelu steps into a new chapter with candlelight, a release that feels both deeply personal and quietly transformative. Rooted in intimate folk storytelling and elevated by atmospheric, beat-driven textures, the track signals a turning point – the moment her sound fully comes into its own.
Written in Mykonos while overlooking the ocean, candlelight was born in the wake of profound personal loss following the passing of her grandmother, affectionately known as her “Oumi“. A former Springbok archer and meelu’s childhood archery coach, she was not only a guiding force in her life but also one of her greatest supporters.
Her passing left meelu grappling with grief and unable to return to life as it once was, until a powerful shift in perspective emerged: the understanding that those we lose would want us to keep living, and to celebrate them.
This sentiment became the emotional foundation of the song, anchored by her grandmother’s chosen gravestone words: “I am not leaving you, I am just going before you.”
At its core, candlelight captures the delicate tension between longing for someone to stay and learning to let them go with love. Through poetic lyricism and vulnerable delivery, meelu explores the ache of goodbye while holding onto connection:
“Heaven is a place for you and I
Blue and white seas are your paradise
I’m not ready, I’m not ready to say goodbye
So I call your name and take you with me one more time“
In the song’s bridge, the repeated refrain – “figure it out, picture it now” – echoes like a gentle voice of reassurance, inspired by her grandmother’s constant reminder that everything would be okay.
While deeply emotional, candlelight carries a sense of lift. Built on soft acoustic layers, ambient textures, celebratory backing vocals and horns and subtle, drum and bass–influenced live rhythms, the track creates movement and openness which reflects on how we carry those we’ve lost while continuing to live.

Her momentum has continued to build across borders, with performances at Y Not Festival in the UK, Splashy Fen in South Africa, and The Great Escape, alongside support slots for Jeremy Loops, GoodLuck, and Casey Lowery, and a sold-out debut headline show in London.

More than just a song about loss, candlelight is a tribute to love that endures. It reflects the sacredness of connection, and the importance of honouring those we’ve lost by continuing to live fully and holding them with us, always.
