Flame On – Can you Braai Like a Champ?
The ‘steaks’ are high with the CapeGate’s annual Braai Challenge, and you’re invited to enter

Time is running out to enter the 2023 CapeGate Braai Challenge with entries closing on 27 August. If last year’s event is anything to go by, then the competition will be hot with a feast of flavour the order of the day in Heritage month, with significant prizes and fame for the winners.

All the action will take place on Saturday 2 September at CapeGate Shopping Centre, in the parking lot near entrance 4, with ten finalists battling it out for bragging rights and prizes to the value of R30 000.

As in previous years, the top 10 finalists selected from online entries by the CapeGate judging team, will compete over two elimination rounds, with the final three having the opportunity to braai the dish they entered the competition with and win over the judges’ taste buds to be crowned CapeGate Braai Challenge champion 2023.

With the meat ingredients supplied by Checkers, the competition kicks off with the ultimate Boerewors roll round where contestants get to whip up their most boujee roll, but the steaks will be high (pun intended) for round two, with the top five needing to deliver the perfect steak according to the judges’ specifications and served with yummy complementing accompaniments.

Judges for the 2023 extravaganza include Eat Out San Pellegrino & Acqua Panna Chef of the Year 2019, Bertus Basson, and 2022 CapeGate Braai Challenge runner up, Chef Randall, who said:

“Last year was amazing, intense and a lot of fun. With Wessel (last year’s winner) being in the USA at the moment, I can’t wait to be on the other side of the braai pit and savour all the creations that are cooked up. I really encourage anyone who can make a fire and wield a pair of tongs to enter and try their hand.”

Echoing the enthusiasm for the annual competition, CapeGate’s marketing manager, Zoë Ganz, is again looking forward to September:

“Cooking with fire is an artform that is in the DNA of every South African, so we are expecting some excellent competition this year. But fair warning, 2022’s contestants really upped the ante on what can be done on the braai so we’re all excited to see what they cook-up, and to welcoming all our spectators to come and give encouragement.”

“I’d also like to thank all our sponsors for their support, without whom this fun event would not be possible.”

Prizes include a weekend away for two (including a spa voucher), a R5000 CapeGate Gift card and fantastic prizes from Checkers who are the main sponsors for the event, Swagg, Execuspecs, Montagu Fruit & Nuts, Cape Union Mart and more.

To get an idea of the high standards set in 2022 and to enter, aspiring braai masters must complete the digital entry form available here. Challengers have one sentence to eloquently describe their dish.

Entries close at one minute before midnight on Sunday 27th August 2023 and the final ten will be notified in that week to compete on Saturday 2 September 2023 from 12H00 – 18H00.
