The Power of Partnership – CapeGate Shopping Centre and Stellenberg High School’s relationship bears fruit
Heart at the Centre – 9 Ways Sponsorship Promotes Community Development
CapeGate Shopping Centre (Capegate), a leading retail hub known for its commitment to community upliftment and support, has a thriving sponsorship partnership with Stellenberg High School. This formidable alliance, which has been in force since 2020 and, recently renewed for another two years, has bolstered the school’s rugby team but also strengthened the bond between the two entities, in the process, enhancing the well-being of the entire community.
Capegate Shopping Centre has always considered the community as being at the heart of its operations. With a steadfast commitment to giving back, the centre has consistently engaged in various community-oriented charitable initiatives, including the much-loved Princess Project. The partnership between CapeGate Shopping Centre and Stellenberg High School’s rugby team (also known as the Jade Brigade), however, is a standout.
The school’s rugby team, over the years, has proudly produced a multitude of professional rugby players who have excelled on national and international stages, and building capacity for tomorrow, the Jade Brigade today find themselves part of the prestigious Western Province Premier A League, which features the Western Cape’s giants in schoolboy rugby. CapeGate’s sponsorship has played a crucial role in providing the necessary resources, training facilities, and equipment to propel the students’ passion for rugby to new heights.
Nicholas Oliphant, General Manager of CapeGate Shopping Centre remarks that:
“We are immensely proud to be associated with Stellenberg High School and their extraordinary rugby team. This sponsorship not only represents our centre’s commitment to sports and youth development but also exemplifies our dedication to uplifting the communities we serve.”
The partnership extends beyond financial support; it embraces the spirit of camaraderie and collaboration. CapeGate Shopping Centre has welcomed every opportunity to engage with the school’s events and activities, thereby building a strong and lasting relationship. The centre’s representatives have also participated in special occasions such as Legends Nights, where rugby icons share their experiences and wisdom with the students, inspiring them to reach for greatness.
Principal of Stellenberg High School, Mrs Yolande Havinga, expressed her gratitude saying:
“At Stellenberg High School we strive for excellence. Our proud rugby tradition is evidence that we motivate our rugby boys to be the best that they can be, to use the talents that they have received wisely, and more importantly – to play with enthusiasm and to grab every opportunity that life affords them.
“We are truly grateful for the loyal support that we have received from CapeGate. Their valued contributions have enabled every rugby player in our school to LIVE the rugby dream to the fullest and to experience the exciting world of Premier Rugby, and we look forward to treasuring and expanding our excellent relationship with CapeGate- for years to come.”
Sponsorship, as shown above, is a powerful tool in supporting local schools and communities, creating a mutually beneficial relationship between sponsors and beneficiaries. Long-term sponsorship partnerships, in particular, can bring numerous advantages to the table for both the sponsor and the recipients. These include:
- Educational Enrichment: significantly enhancing the educational experience by funding various initiatives, such as extracurricular activities, field trips, workshops, or specialized programmes that may otherwise be unaffordable for the school or community. This can lead to a more holistic and enriched learning environment for the students.
- Improved facilities and resources: help upgrade facilities and provide essential resources that schools and communities may struggle to acquire due to limited budgets. This includes modernising classrooms, providing updated technology, libraries, and sports equipment.
- Strengthening community bonds: Sponsoring local schools and community projects fosters a sense of community involvement and pride. It brings together different stakeholders and creates a shared sense of responsibility for the betterment of the area, leading to stronger community bonds.
- Talent and skills development: Some sponsorships focus on skill development programmes, mentorship, or scholarships for students. Investing in education and skills, contributes to the development of a talented and competent future workforce.
- Long-term positive impact: Sustainable sponsorship partnerships enable long-term planning and impact assessment. Sponsors can see the positive effects of their contributions over time, while recipients can rely on consistent support, allowing for more significant and lasting changes.
- Empowerment and inclusivity: promoting inclusivity and empowering those who may not have had access to certain opportunities otherwise is empowering and supports a cohesive united world.
- Increased employee engagement: For Cape Gate, it has been important to engage our employees in these volunteering or mentorship programmes to boost employee morale and create a sense of purpose within our centre.
- Financial stability for schools: Consistent sponsorship provides financial stability for schools, enabling them to plan and allocate resources more effectively and reduce the burden on fundraising efforts.
- Inspiration and role modelling: Cape Gate hopes their commitment and support can inspire others to contribute positively to society and promote a culture of giving back.
“To maximise the benefits of long-term sponsorship partnerships, it is essential for both sponsors and beneficiaries to establish clear objectives, communicate effectively, and maintain transparency in their collaboration,” says Zoë Ganz, Marketing Manager at Capegate. “Building trust and a shared vision between sponsors and recipients can lead to sustainable, impactful initiatives that support local schools and communities in meaningful ways, which we have seen through our support of Stellenberg High School and our other projects, and I encourage business in South Africa to reach out and get involved where they can.”
