Op My Eish!: Braai fun and games and a very significant date
Episode nine of Op My Eish! began with a relaxed and sociable atmosphere, but it also showed that the competition for time with Ruan was becoming more serious.
The episode started with the ladies reflecting on the previous day’s activities over breakfast. JP joined them to share the plan for the day: Ruan would braai for everyone, and there would be a few games to keep the energy high. Saartjie announced, she unfortunately had to leave for a few days for work.
The group later met beneath an impressive baobab tree, where they learned more about its history. The tree is hollow, and the ladies had the opportunity to step inside and explore it from within.
The fun then kicked off with a series of drinking games. For the first challenge, the ladies split into groups of three and had to blow four small balls across a line on the table using the Donkey Long Tong fire blower. Hermi, Bejanke and Minette’s team won, which meant Cindy-Lee, Charlene and Jenine had to take a shot.
The next game had everyone laughing uncontrollably: each participant had to try to keep water in her mouth while one of the other ladies lightly hit her on the bum. Almost no one could keep a straight face.
While Ruan prepared the braai, the ladies played a round of beer pong with JP. Soon after, everyone gathered around the table where Ruan’s braai skills clearly impressed the group.
The following day brought a new challenge. Charlene, Minette and Bejanke were invited to take part in an activity where the prize was an evening alone with Ruan.
The challenge tested their trust and listening skills. Eight personal items belonging to Ruan – including a bottle of wine, an apple, soap, a small bottle, shoes, a shirt, a gym ball and weights – were hidden around the area. Blindfolded, the ladies had to locate all eight items by listening carefully to Ruan’s instructions. The fastest seeker-finder would win the date.
Before the challenge began, Minette said:
“This is a really special date – real one-on-one time with Ruan. So, I’m going to give it my absolute best.”
Charlene also expressed her determination:
“I really need this challenge. I have to win! No matter what it takes, I’ll just have to listen carefully and stay focused.”
Charlene went first, followed by Bejanke and then Minette. In the end, Minette achieved the fastest time and won the highly sought-after date with Ruan.
The night began with a romantic dinner where Ruan spoke his mind:
“Minette and I have a strong connection, and it feels natural. There’s never nothing to talk about – it’s just easy with her. That’s something I look for in someone who will share my life. Nothing is forced, and that’s something I really enjoy.”
Meanwhile, JP checked in with the other ladies to hear how they felt about Minette’s date. Some of them were clearly frustrated and wondered why those three women had been chosen for the activity. JP reassured them that Ruan was making time for everyone and that no one had been intentionally excluded.
Back on the date, the conversation between Ruan and Minette grew deeper. Ruan admitted that he felt a stronger connection with only two or three of the women, while with the others he simply got along well.
When Minette asked whether she was one of those women, his answer left little room for doubt:
“Who else would I have been talking about? No one else. And you know it.”
For Minette, it confirmed what she was already feeling:
“Hearing that just gave me reassurance and confirmation deep inside, because that’s exactly how I feel too.”
Later, Minette asked Ruan to do something special with her. The two attached a lock to a chain and symbolically threw away the key.
“It wasn’t a declaration of love,” Minette explained. “It was just a special moment to show him how to create memories that aren’t necessarily materialistic, but that hold real sentiment. But I don’t think I can deny anymore that I’m starting to fall a little bit in love with this man.”
The evening continued with a massage beneath the trees, courtesy of the resort’s spa, and later drinks, where their conversation turned to the future – specifically the topic of children.
Minette said she would like to have children one day, although not necessarily soon. Ruan then asked how they would handle that conversation if it resurfaced in six years’ time.
Her response highlighted the maturity of their discussion:
“It’s important to revisit things then, because those are the kind of things that can easily lead to resentment later on.”
Ruan agreed, and the two ended their evening after sharing one of the most meaningful dates of the season so far.
With Minette and Ruan’s connection growing stronger and questions beginning to surface among the other ladies, the dynamic within the group is starting to shift. Episode nine showed that time with Ruan is becoming increasingly valuable – and that every date has the potential to change the direction of his journey.
