Spoiler Alert: A player is sent packing in Die Brug
The players knew it was coming, but there was still shock and total disbelief when the first player was removed from Die Brug. According to the rules, as explained in the first episode, the leader was obliged to make the decision alone. When Avril declared that 44-year-old Arnold was the person to leave the game, you could see the rest of the players didn’t expect it at all.
Before Avril’s dramatic announcement, other players had been grumbling about her leadership style. Geo was convinced she doesn’t have a plan to build the bridge. Larry said if they had to vote again, Avril would lose her position, and Tina and Marna said in a private conversation that they hadn’t voted for her in the first place.
“I thought Avril was joking,” Sam said. Larry was emotional when he talked about how much he liked Arnold.
Avril defended her decision by insisting that Arnold had underestimated and undermined her as leader.
“I was so shocked when I was voted out,” said Arnold, a designer and artist from Pretoria. “It was awful. I was very disappointed and quite hurt. I didn’t see it coming – not so soon. Especially not from Avril. We went swimming the afternoon before, and I thought I had a gift to calm her down. I feel like I really did my part, but I understand it’s just a game, and I’ve made peace with it.”
A highlight for him was when he and Larry swam in the dam.
“He had never swum in open water before, and I said, ‘Come, I’ll take you!’ Then everyone jumped in, and it was awesome.”
Arnold’s removal was not the only drama in episode 2. It became increasingly clear that the players would not succeed in building the rafts they need to construct the bridge.
When the arrival of new mail was announced, Nonnie and Larry went to get it. The letter said two players had to go on an overnight outing to fetch equipment.
Geo was chosen by the players, and he asked Robert to accompany him. The letter they received at their destination, threw a spanner in the works. Geo and Robert were faced with a tough choice: they could get two hammers and 1 500 nails, or they could get R100 000 – which is part of the R1 million prize money – to share between them as well as saws and plans to use for the construction of the rafts. There was also another twist: if they decided to take the money, it had to remain a secret between them. If anyone else found out, they would lose every cent of it.
The other players also started colluding, with some forming alliances, others remaining silent, while some members of the group really started speaking their minds. Who can trust whom? Only time will tell.
