Amor Vittone tells her own truth on Waar Daar ’n Wil Is
For more than two decades, she has lived between truth and lies, on front pages and amid the noise of social media. In the episode of Waar Daar ’n Wil Is airing on 9 December, Amor Vittone opens her heart to Lee-Ann van Rooi.
Amor early on in the programme, says:
“I live my life in love. I live with passion. If you don’t have passion, you have nothing.”
But living life under the microscope is not always easy. Amor rose to fame in various capacities – from South Africa’s first Lotto girl to singer and actress. And then there was, of course, her fairytale marriage to Springbok rugby player Joost van der Westhuizen, the birth of their two children followed by the very public breakdown of the marriage, as well as Joost’s motor neuron disease and his death in 2017.
She speaks openly with Lee-Ann about various aspects of her life, including what hurt her the most.
Her answer? “When trust is broken. When love that you thought was there is no longer there.” The hardest part, however, was seeing the pain her children and her own parents endured in the midst of the controversy surrounding her and Joost.
She admits she has not always been right. “I’ve made terribly many mistakes. Many! But I have made peace with my Creator, and I do not need to apologise to people. I am in a safe place in my life.”
Joost, whom she calls her great love, lives on in his children – and not only does Jordan look very much like his father, he and his sister Kylie also share the same habits as their dad.
When the subject of forgiveness comes up, Amor says: “If you don’t forgive, you can’t move on.” She has a support system that keeps her standing – her mother, Delyse, sister Lorén and brother-in-law Lennie de Villiers, her sister Ilana who lives in Canada, as well as her good friend Helena Tarantino.
In the episode, Delyse recounts for the first time how she and Amor’s father, Dario, met Joost and how he told them he was in the process of divorcing his first wife. She also explains that at that stage Amor was more successful than Joost. (Dario passed away in 2023 at the age of 82.) Lorén and Helena are equally protective of Amor and would do anything to support her.
Amor tells Lee-Ann that depression and anxiety had her in their grip, particularly during 2022. With everything that was happening in her life, she began to struggle with insomnia. Sleeping pills became her solution, but later on two or even four pills were not enough, and it began to affect her health. Today, however, she can look back on that time as just another hurdle she has overcome.
What was the lesson that took her the longest to learn, was Lee-Ann’s final question.
“To forgive myself,” Amor answered.
