Alex Solomon Ignites The Summer With Feel-Good Single, Ty Dollar
Rising star Alex Solomon, a 25-year-old showstopper, drops her new single Ty Dollar (ft. Zwicky), channelling the comic rush of youth and freedom into a sun-soaked, irresistibly catchy anthem. Known for previous releases, such as Typical You and STUPID, this new single sees Alex stepping into a new era in her career.
“Ty Dollar is a fun one,” Alex shares. “I wanted to capture the thrill and humor of a spontaneous night-out gone wrong.”
It’s a bright, tongue-in-cheek anthem that’s perfect for summer.
Alex reunited with longtime friend Chad Mansfield of Basset Films, someone she’s known since childhood in Plettenberg Bay, where the video was shot.
“We grew up together, so I felt completely comfortable to just play around again, but this time in our professions,” she shares.
With limited resources in Plett, Chad stepped in at the last minute, helping her shoot a one-location, rolling-shot concept inspired by the summer-drive feeling she always associated with the track. They rigged cameras onto her dad’s shaky old Jimny –
“It only has four gears and maxes out at 60km/h, so Chad had to get very creative,” she laughs. “I hadn’t rehearsed anything, not even driving the car properly, so I decided to just let go and have the most fun I could. That’s exactly what the song is made for.”
The song tells the story of sneaking away with someone you probably shouldn’t, only to end up trapped in a hilariously awkward situation you’ll both regret.
“Every summer deserves at least one wild story,” Alex jokes. “This track is a reminder that sometimes the best memories come from the worst decisions.”
Blending infectious hooks and shimmering synths with journal-entry-style lyricism, Alex has carved out a sound that’s equal parts clever and confessional.
“I want it to feel like you’re texting your best friend.”
Originally written in 2019, this new track holds a special place in Alex’s heart.
“It’s the first song I ever released, just under a different artist name!” she confesses. Now, she’s re-releasing it as a nostalgic send-off before entering a bold new musical era. “I call it my coming-of-age story, except it’s really just me realising I should’ve stayed home.”
Once again, Alex proves she’s part of the new age of pop storytellers, turning life’s misadventures into anthems!
