Johannesburg – 1 July 2021. In the early hours of this morning, a new STAR was discovered in the Johannesburg radio firmament. STARFM 91.9, a new community radio station operated by the Gauteng Media Development Project, broadcasts to the Northern Suburbs of Johannesburg and promises listeners “The Best Local Music and More”.

Seasoned radio duo, Greg and Lucky kicked off the station’s broadcast this morning. Their personal social media pages had been abuzz with anticipation since they announced their radio comeback, and they were both very excited to get back together on-air.

“We were counting the sleeps until today and we’re really amped to be working together on radio again,” said Lucky. “We were watching the clock and although we should never wish for time to pass, the last few minutes before our 6 o’clock start were some of the longest minutes in our lives,” said Greg.

STARFM 91.9’s Program Manager, Caren du Preez says:

“I’m so glad that the day has arrived and that we are now up and running. The entire STARFM 91.9 team has put in a lot of work ahead of today and it’s a relief to be bringing our different, fun, authentic, friendly and inclusive mix of content to air.”

The station boasts a stellar (see what we did there) line-up of young and fresh radio talent including: Greg and Lucky, Mzi; Mantsoe Pout; Justin and Sibs; Mark Mdluli; Adrian Naidoo; Sivan (Eskimo Writer) Pillay; Lucy Bodumele and Shaun.

“Listening to STARFM 91.9 is going to be a fun experience, one that will keep the listeners plugged in to what is happening in their neighbourhood, whilst showcasing the best in local music, and more” adds Du Preez.

Tune into STARFM 91.9 on 91.9 FM or listen online.

Star FM About Us

First turning our microphone on 1 July 2021, StarFM is a youth-driven community radio station broadcasting to Johannesburg’s northern ‘burbs.

With a star-studded line-up (see what we did there) we aim to have fun, be inclusive and real, while we inform, inspire, make waves in our community and of course, play you The Best Local Music and More!

We are also passionate about supporting future radio superstars, which we aim to do through our Radio Training Academy – previously the Hot 91.9FM Radio Training Academy.

The free 6-month course is a sustainable mentorship course feeding young talent to the broadcasting industry and an example of our commitment to our community and uplifting the youth. The academy offers an intensive hands-on programme with weekly lectures – which due to COVID safety precautions will resume in 2022.
