Hooked
Underregulated, opportunistic and often predatory, the towing industry thrives in a grey zone. And with more than eight million uninsured vehicles on the road, many motorists only learn the true cost of being in a crash after the dust has settled. Tow trucks are a familiar sight, skipping lights and ramping curbs to be first on the scene of an accident – but what happens after your vehicle is towed can come as a nasty shock. Exorbitant fees, vanishing vehicles and costly repairs all add up to skyrocketing anxiety and expense for owners. Carte Blanche exposes the darker side of an industry few understand, and most encounter only in moments of crisis.

A Living Legacy
George Hospital: a quaint building in a picturesque Western Cape town. But the population it serves is enormous and lacking vital services. But next year, in the cramped confines of the third-floor paediatric unit, a brand-new facility will take shape. As it is completed, the Trust that makes this transformation possible will come of age. Founded on our twentieth birthday in 2008, the Carte Blanche Making a Difference Trust has blown expectations out of the water since the beginning. Now, we return to long-completed projects to recognise the contributions of donors and partners, and reflect on lives touched, communities served and stories told.

Classical Revolution
Our richest recent global export might just be classical music. But while our musicians are celebrated globally, international orchestras rarely play works by South African composers. And when they do, those pieces have traditionally been filtered through a Western classical tradition. But now, a new generation of musicians is on a mission to share South African music for a global audience without losing its distinct voice and character. And they’re getting an enthusiastic reception overseas. What happens when African rhythms and harmonies meet Western musical traditions? And can our musicians express their identities authentically through classical music?
